Projects Created in Communication DesignTypographic Book Cover
For this project, I was required to create a book cover using only typographic elements (text, font) and no colors beyond black, white and grey. The layout needed to include the title, author, descriptive byline and could create a shape from a paragraph of text within the book. The type had to show line, shape and texture. Clearly, I chose the novel The Great Gatsby and focused on the dark narrative of the story. This is one of my favorite classics and the twisted love story between Gatsby and Daisy is one that I wanted to portray through this book cover. I used a font that seemed to fit into the 1920's time period, used the money sign ($) in that same font as a unique typographic characteristic to bring interest, and then created silhouettes of a man and flapper girl. For those, I used a paragraph on when Daisy falls short of Gatsby's expectations, which is a pivotal moment in the story line and drives the rest of the plot.

Endangered Species BrochureThe purpose of this brochure was to elicit an emotional reaction from readers in order to benefit a specific endangered animal. The brochure needed to inform the audience of the animal's physical characteristics, habitat and reason to keep them alive. Required elements included a self mailer on the back panel, a return form to send in money, and photos that captured the essence of the animal. Beyond that there was a lot of room for creativity and style. I chose the Amur Leopard as my endangered species, and chose photos to show information about the animal as well as pull on readers' heart strings.

Interior Design NewsletterThere was a lot of freedom with this project, with only a few simple requirements. The topic itself, design, colors, content, etc. were all my choice. I wanted to design a fun, bright publication on interior design and went for a Kate Spade - inspired look with the bold pink, black and gold and then a touch of grey to soften the contrast. The articles were not written by me, each contains a title and author byline to give credit. However, I did shorten the articles in order to make them fit into the publication appropriately. The design is entirely original.
